Games at Levels C, Level D & Level ERecreational Mathematics has a considerable appeal for many pupils. Games are not really regarded as work, yet they have a very important part to play. Each "Game" consists of 12 cards. This allows groups of 2, 3 or 4 players to contest a game. Groups larger than this should be discouraged. The cards should be shuffled face down and shared out equally among all players. A nominated player should select a card and read out the question. It is likely that the question will need to be repeated at least once more. All other participants must calculate the answer "mentally". The group should decide on a signal, perhaps a raised thumb, to indicate that an individual has calculated the answer. When all thumbs are raised, the person holding the card with the correct answer should read it out. All other members of the group can verify that the correct answer has been given. The group may need to agree the maximum length of time allowed to answer a question. If someone in the group takes too long the winner must explain how the answer was arrived at before moving on. The next question can be read out and the procedure repeated until a winner is found. In the following game, the next person starts. Loop games are designed to consolidate skills previously mastered using the powerpoint presentations available on the CD ROM. Mental Agility.
